THIS IS NEW!!: I am now using "Shipsurance" third party insurance options for all available packages, domestic and International packages for loss, damage or non-delivery or theft while in transit. However, keep in mind, no shipping insurance will cover theft after the package is delivered. This insurance s an option you must select with your purchase and it actually covers International packages as well. It is not expensive and has better coverage with less limitations than USPS insurance. I highly recommend this coverage in addition to signature confirmation.
I am now shipping all of the Wolf Whiskers' packages using "biodegradable Poly bags." It's a little better for the environment. I have no idea how a poly material can degrade in landfills, but it does. Pretty cool!
Additional claims and/or reports may be required as with any insurance claim.Due to commercial importing and exporting fees required for animal hair, Wolf Whiskers can only ship brushes containing actual animal hair within the United States. I can ship synthetic brushes and handles only to all locations. See the FAQ page for further details.
SECTION 1: About Wolf Whiskers and where to start?
SECTION 7: SHIPPING QUESTIONS INCLUDING OVERSEAS LIMITATIONS
SECTION 8: PRIVACY & OTHER QUESTIONS
SECTION 1: About Wolf Whiskers and where to start?: #1 Q: Can you tell me more about Wolf Whiskers? A: Wolf Whiskers is a solely owned and operated hobby/micro business model by me, Peter Wolf, making custom made shaving brushes since 2013 and shipping them Worldwide. I am the only person involved with Wolf Whiskers from conception to birth. I hand cast most of my turning materials. I hand turn 100% of my brush handles on a lathe, (no automation or computers involved). I even hand assemble and package each brush. I am the only person with whom you would ever communicate, and I answer all correspondence within the same day, often within the same hour. I even create and edit 100% of the website development. 95% of the Wolf Whiskers shaving brush handles you see were made to order, custom requested brushes attained through a "Waitlist" process. A little more detail can be found here on the FAQ page and on the Home page
#2 Q: Why do you even have a "wait list" and why not just keep the list open? A: Waiting is frustrating. I am simply unable to keep up with orders if I were to keep the list open. For information about my Waitlist availability, visit the Waitlist link on my website.
#3 Q: Where do I start? How do I get one of the Wolf Whiskers shaving brushes? A: Ordering custom designed items can be a daunting task, but it doesn't need to be. I am 100% approachable everyday, even holidays, and always reply to correspondence. My goal is to be approachable and take the sting out of the process if I am able to. It is my passion. The best way to get started is to read this information that lays out the process "Custom Ordering Process." This link is on the top and bottom of every page. It will fully explain the lottery to get on my waitlist
SECTION 2: PRICING AND PAYING
#1 Q: What is the price of one of your shaving brushes? A: The fully explained and best answer is found on the Price link found on the menu. Artisan bespoke items can be complicated for pricing.
#2 Q: My postman leaves my packages occasionally in front of my door step and I don't trust my neighbors. What should I do? A: Get Delivery signature confirmation which requires them to prove it was delivered. Also consider adding Insurance. Remember, stray dogs love the smell of badger and can sense this miles away. Curiosity may intrigue them to come visit your front door. PayPal and USPS will not provide any compensation or validate a claim if tracking shows the package delivered. I know this to be true.
#3 Q: When and How do I pay? A: Wolf Whiskers is fairly unique and prepayment is rarely requested. A PayPal invoice is sent after the handle is turned and pictures sent. Other arrangements may be requested ahead of time. I can accept cash, checks, credit card payments. If I send an email with brush completion proof pictures and I follow up with an email and or invoice, and communication for the transaction has stopped for over 3 days, the transaction and or invoice will be canceled and the brush will be offered for general sale. This is not intended to slight or to insult a customer, but simply to maintain the anticipated compensation for the valuable time spent making the product. Wolf Whiskers is a sole proprietor micro-business and needs to maintain a constant flow of income. Communication is key, if you need to delay payment, please let me know at the time of the order or within a 48 hours of ordering and I will gladly postpone making the order a couple weeks. If you need additional time, I would gladly bump you down the waitlist one single time. If communication was stopped due to an unforeseen occurrence from either of us, I can make a different brush in the future.
SECTION 3: PROCESS AND AVAILABILITY
#1: Q Do you have any brushes currently made in stock? A: Not very often. Rarely, in fact.
#2: Q How many brushes can I order after signing up on the waitlist? A: One brush per signed up name.
#3 Q: Can I get my brush made sooner than your estimated time? A: I used to offer this option. Not anymore. I simply am not able to.
SECTION 4: ABOUT MY CUSTOM CONFIGURATION PROCESS
#1 Q: Do you do custom color requests? A: Colors are divided into only 3 Primary colors: Pure Red, Pure Blue, and Pure yellow. Similarly, there are only 3 Secondary colors which are Orange, purple and green. Then after that only 6 Tertiary colors. Yes, only 6. (Magenta, Vermillion, Violet, Teal, Amber, and Chartreuse) Now when you consider tone, shades, and tint to create variations of those 12 colors, creating a multitude of hues, and it all get so confusing. Now add the "CMYK" color models that a printer uses, and "RGB" color models that a computer and TV monitor uses, your head might start spinning. Why do I mention this? Our human brain can easily conceive of colors we see and can combine those colors into an imaginary compilation that is pleasing, but that does not always transition to the real World mixing of those colors. Scientists and artists spend countless hours developing formulas for colors for tinting paint to get them just right. Computers are then used with those formulas to tint paint, but no such thing exists for casting resin. Add to the mixing complication is the exothermic reaction which can exceed 190 degrees F. Simply put, not all primary colors will work with all secondary colors. For example, red cannot mix in harmony with green, and blue can't mix in harmony with orange --- both mixtures would result in a slightly brown color. Have you ever wondered why your local home supply store has tinted paint for sale at a discount? If your head is spinning after reading this, that is exactly my intent. But to the initial question, the answer is yes, as much as it might be possible, I will do a custom color request. However, you MUST be flexible on quantity of each color, hues, tones, tint and shade before you consider a custom color combination. Over the years, I have created color combinations that I feel are pleasing and most often come together with positive results. And again add the subtle differences in communication, photography, photographic editing and enhancements, human eyesight, lighting, and computer monitors, it nearly makes it impossible to match a color combination that you are seeing in your "mind's eye." I also only entertain up a maximum of 3 colors swirled together. 2 to 3 colors work best, in my opinion. In a rare occasion, 4 colors will combine well depending on how they fall on the color wheel. (Primary/secondary or Tertiary colors) Some colors do not blend well and occasionally one will overtake or dominate the other colors. Your best bet is to inquire with me. I will provide you with answers to the best of my experience.
#2 Q: What does a Custom Color Combination cost (CCC)? Typically a $4-$18USD additional fee to your brush will be added for custom color castings (CCC). You may wonder why there is such a range for this up-charge. I assure you that it is a very modest and unpretentious variable up-charge based on many factors. Some of those factors include, but are not limited to, the additional casting time, the size of the handle blank, number of tiers (layers), complexity of the casting, additional quantity of resin and wasted resin involved in the trial and errors of color matching the more unique color requests, and other consumables supplies. This is very different than using one of my named color themes on the order form. The named color themes are proven, popular, and fairly consistently reproduced in larger casting batches keeping the price consistent and much lower since it saves time, resin, and consumable materials.
#3 Q: Can you do multiple tiers? A: If you like the color stacking, tiering, two tone look or three tiers, you will notice with many of those brushes that there is often some color bleeding from one layer to the next layer. This is due to the exothermic reaction that occurs during casting one layer upon another layer. Casting the layers together is better than any glue on the market and it ensure 100% permanent adhesion. However, the exothermic reaction also draws colors from one layer to the next layer in very subtle amounts. Unlike some vintage handles where the two parts come apart, it will not come apart when they are cast together. I cannot avoid this, so if bleeding might displease you, please avoid ordering anything with a stacked layering. I simply haven't found a way to avoid this yet.
#4 Q: What about translucent (see thru) colors? A: I will only do Translucent or clear resin on the bottoms of the brush handles, but not the top near the knot. It simply gets ugly on the top where the knot enters the handle. The interior of that socket hole is scored up with drill marks and then the glue adds additional displeasing appearances. Also please note, translucent resin sometimes traps tiny imperfections such as tiny particle debris, tiny bubbles or dye pigments "dots." These dots, particles or tiny trapped bubbles rarely, if ever, become larger than the tip a thumbtack. If there are more than 3 dots, I don't even show you the pictures and that triggers a remake before you even see the handle. It is the exception that this happens excessively, but there are always some that you will see if you blow up the photo images or use a magnifying glass. Anything that is excessive will be redone by me so if I make a brush and send you pictures, I have considered it acceptable. But, if this might be unattractive to you, it would be most advisable to choose an opaque color theme that hides these characteristics. Those semi-translucent bottoms with colors dribbled into the clear base typically will not show much light thru the resin without a back-light or being held up to the light. The semi-translucent is designed to be semi-translucent and not have large pockets of clear showing. Polyester Resin is impossible to fully predict with any certainty to place it exactly where one may want the resin to be. It disperses somewhat during the exothermic reaction. Many of the images, that you see in my galleries or on the forums, are taken with a flashlight shining light thru the bottom portion of the handle to show the semi-translucent nature. #5 Q: Can you make me one of your Inside Out style brushes? A: I no longer take requests for Inside out glass series. I sometimes make them as Limited Edition brush and only sell them as flash sales on my website store.
#6 Q: Can you get items like challenge coins or small coins to put on the bottom of my brush? A: Ethically, Wolf Whiskers has chosen not to procure trademarked items to put on the handles. For obvious reasons if I sold a brush with a Trademarked golf marker coin for an NFL team for example, potential lawsuits could certainly be possible. Customers may send an item that they own if it fits. Max size for a medallion/coin is around 24mm in diameter for most handle shapes. Larger coins may be placed on some handles like the Beehive or Chubby or PJ or PJ2. Any brush using a Franchise product. can never be sold as a franchise item.
#7 Q: Can I take one of your handle designs and change the shape to make it unique? A: It is really a case by case consideration.
#8 Q: What if I don't really like the brush you made for me? A: If you see the proof images and just are not “feeling” it and would rather pass, cancel, or have me try again, I am more than happy to do that. However, a couple caveats, I will only try to make the same particular handle design or custom cast color one additional attempt for a total of two attempts for a custom designed handle. If I am unable to provide a handle that looks great to you, I simply won’t be able to make it. However, so that you don’t get dropped off my “radar,” I will happily make a handle using one of my many named shapes and named color themes in lieu of a custom casting or custom shape for the third attempt. If the third brush just isn't right for you, it would be best for you to find a craftsman or artisan that can make it for you.
#9 Q: Why can't I purchase the brush I previously turned down/rejected? A: If for any reason you just don't like the brush I made for you, I don't take any offense, however, I only offer the turned down brushes for sale to the general public, but not available for purchase from the customer requesting the commissioned brush. Why? Simply put, in the past when I offered the rejected brush to the original customer for a discounted price, it only encouraged the customer to turn it down to obtain a discount and then word had spread that I had done this and it had only served to encourage multiple rejections to obtain multiple brushes by a few people. Why is that bad? 1) It stalled my waitlist, 2) It was also a less desirable tactic by a few to create some “backroom” deals amongst friends to bypass the waitlist. The end result was that all those waiting patiently on the list legitimately had to wait longer. Besides, why would you want that brush if it didn’t quite match your mind’s eye? No additional fee or compensation is necessary or desired from a turned down brush.
#10 Q: Do you embed objects inside your handles? A: I no longer do this for custom orders, but would be happy to ask around and help you find another brush artisan willing to do that.
SECTION 5: EXTERNAL LINK SUPPORT
1) I am having trouble choosing a shaving brush, can you help me decide? 2) How do I care for my Shaving brush? 3) What is normal shedding? 4) How do I make lather with this brush? 5) What knot and loft do you recommend?
There are many forums that provide excellent knowledge to help you on your journey toward wet shaving enjoyment. Here are some great links to help you in making the best decision for your needs: These links will open in a separate window for your convenience.
#1 Q: Do you use Synthetic knots as well? A: Yes, Wolf Whiskers has several synthetic options both from TGN and several synthetic knots Nathan Clark (Ubersoft). I also have 24mm and 25mm "Black Wolf" bulb and fan knots and also my "Super Plush" line.
#2 Q: Can you remove a knot for me and put it into one of your handles? A: Case by case. Contact me about details. Some knots are just not reusable or fall apart upon removal from the socket hole. I do not salvage the handle if I remove a knot. I have not yet discovered a viable method to salvage both the knot and the handle.
#3: Q: What knots do you use? A: Primarily The Golden Nib (TGN) and some synthetics that I procured. I also use knots from Nathan Clark called "Ubersoft" and Envy White knots when in stock. If you are concerned about your knot shedding at all, please send me your favorite knot supplier that you trust. You are always welcome to send me your favorite knot if I am able to use it.
#4 Q: Can you make me just the handle for a knot? A: Remember, each knot has characteristics different from others, the variance can be extremely different even amongst knots rated the same size or even supplied by the same vendor. It is often necessary for you to have a few shop tools for minor adjustments, like a Dremel (rotary tool), drill press and Forstner bits for example. Wolf Whiskers will not guarantee that your knot will fit inside the WW handle, but will prepare a handle per your request. All I need is the diameter (in millimeters) of the hole you want and the depth.
#5 Q: Can I ship you my own brush knot and have you make a brush with it? A: Yes, Wolf Whiskers can set most knots available with some exceptions. Please inquire.
6 Q: Can I just have a knot manufacturer send a knot directly to Wolf Whiskers? A: It is always better that you see the knot first so you know exactly what you are getting. I will set the knot that I receive, but know there are some discrepancies on knot characteristics from one vendor to another even amongst the same grades of knots. Because if this, it is very strongly encouraged, but not necessary, for you to take delivery first so that you become familiar with the knot you are ordering.
#7 Q: Can I just buy a knot directly from you? A: The Golden Nib, Envy Shave, Maggards, APshave, Elite Razor, Declaration Brushworks, AP Shave are great sources for shaving brush knots. Wolf Whiskers does not market shaving brush knots themselves.
#8 Q: Will you procure knots for me and use them for a requested shaving brush? A: At this time, I only procure animal hair knots from American vendors of badger hair knots due to significant fees for a commercial entities governed by the Fish and Wildlife Service.
#9 Q: I'm concerned about shedding with the knots you carry? A: Some knots do shed more than others, but there are tens of thousands of hairs in every brush knot. Many knots have over a hundred thousand hairs. Although it is annoying, it is more common than you would think even with the expensive brushes. It is normal after the manufacturing process to get some shedding. Care and use can affect shedding too. Care instructions are provided with your brush. If you are concerned with shedding from knots I carry, please buy your favorite knot and I will set it for you. I can not guarantee a knot will not shed for you. Please, if you are concerned, purchase your own knot and arrange to ship it to me.
#10 Q: How much to have WW replace a knot? A: This is something I simply do not know how to do.
#11 Q: Can you make a handle and send it directly to a knotting service or another vendor for me? A: I can do this and have done it often, but I caution you, you are buying the brush handle "as is." That is to say, if you get the brush after it has been knotted and you don't like my workmanship, appearance, feel, shape weight or color of the handle or the knot, there is absolutely nothing I can or will offer you for compensation. It is always wise for you to take possession of the handle first to look it over before you have a knotting service do their work.
SECTION 7: QUESTIONS CONCERNING SHIPPING
THIS IS NEW: I am now using "Shipsurance" third party insurance options for all available packages for domestic and International packages. This is an option you must select with your purchase. It covers loss, damage or theft during transit. Additional filed claims and/or reports may be required as would be with any insurance claim.
#1 Q: Can I make the order and have a friend make the payment and have it also shipped to their home? A: This raises many "red flags." If, after all negotiations are complete, the order is complete and the payment is received from a different person and different address with whom I have never heard or communicated, I have GREAT concerns, so I cannot accept that. All Payments MUST be made from the individual with whom I have communicated only. However, if you desire a third party to ultimately make the payment. I must communicate with this person, receive payment from this person's account (credit or PayPal), and finally ship the package to an address for which they have manually entered with the payment. This ensures that the purchaser is aware of the purchase and to where his purchase is being sent. All tracking will be forwarded only to the account holder from whom and to whom the shaving brush was ordered and sent. This is intended to protect not only the seller but the individual from whose account made the purchase.
#2 Q: Can I ship my brush to someone else or a different address that I used when paying the PayPal invoice? A: Many people like to make gift purchases. It is important that you select the correct address to which you want your brush sent when making payment. In other words, if you buy a gift for a friend using your personal account, but you want the brush shipped to your friend, then you must manually enter your friend's address when making the payment. I will not change an address for overseas shipping, but I can change it for Domestic shipping and add signature confirmation to ensure arrival occurs.
#3 Q: I didn't get a tracking number. Do you have one? A: Tracking is available for ALL package shipments within the USA and the tracking information is sent only to the account holder for which the purchase was made. If you cannot find the tracking, please let me know and I can share it with the account holder who made the purchase, but never to a third party. Again, this is to prevent fraud and theft.
#3 Q: How do you ship the brush? A: Either USPS First Class, USPS Priority or for USA shipments, UPS is also an option. Signature confirmation is automatically included for all brushes with a value of $120 or more but is only an option for packages shipped within the USA. Signature confirmation is also a customer option for a lesser value.
#4 Q: How do you ship international packages? A: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS
1) International packages are shipped with USPS First Class or Priority International rates. The rates for First class range between $8.50-$15.00 and for Priority Flat Rate between $22-$35. I will give you an honest price and never charge you a penny more.
2) GREAT NEWS! I now use a third party insurance company named Shipsurance for most shipments including International. For a small $1.35-$2.70 added charge, your package will actually be covered with insurance for loss, damage, shortage or theft while packages are in transit for most International countries. (A few exceptions apply, so ask me if you are concerned about shipping to your country.) Be aware, that neither USPS or Shipassurance covers for theft once your package has been delivered. Believe it or not, the USPS will not otherwise cover any international packages shipped First class or Priority flat rate, so this is a GREAT addition. With any shipping insurance claim, be aware that a claim requires a filed report with the shipping company (USPS) and if theft occurred, a police report as well.
3) All international packages require a Custom's Declaration page. (PS Form 2976). These pages WILL show my shaving brush as Merchandise with the description as "Shaving Brush, Synthetic Fibers only" since I never ship Badger hair outside of the USA. It will also show the value in US dollars openly on the outside of the box. This is 100% unavoidable as it is US law to fill out this information. I will not place gift or declare lower values on these forms to avoid importing taxes or custom fees from foreign countries. I value my integrity as a vital component of Wolf Whiskers. Please do not ask me to be "Customer Friendly" and to list a lower monetary value to save on custom fees. It offends me and I will not violate laws or my integrity and risk losing everything for which I have worked hard.
4) Tracking is now available for many, but not all International packages, but tracking is only as good as the people with the scanners in their hands so there is often human error with timely scans.
5) This is most vital that all International customers understand this: USPS will not open any claim or inquiry for lost or damaged packages for either International First Class or International Priority Flat rate packages per Publication 370 which is found at the USPS website. THEREFORE, I CANNOT and WILL NOT be responsible for lost parcels outside of the USA either First class international or Priority Flat rate unless you purchase the insurance as described in #2 above.
6) I only ship the packages to the address that is provided with the PayPal or Square payment. I never change the address, so it is vital that the customer choose a valid and correct shipping address. Thus far, in the last 6+ years, only one international package that Wolf Whiskers has shipped and had been lost, but that was not due to WW or USPS, but the postal service within that particular country.
7 ) Often shipment might take several weeks or even over a month due to customs and multiple postal systems. Packages may be stuck in customs long periods in some countries. If this occurs to you, contact your customs office. I cannot control the processes that Customs have within your country. We do not have any recourse with postal delivery systems outside if the USA. Fortunately, I have never had an international package lost to date, so odds are good you will receive your order as expected.
****** Please understand these policies. Please consider all of these policies and limitations and if anything concerns you, please consider an international forwarding shipping service or do not place an order. *****
#5 Q: My postal deliveries are not placed in a secure location or in front of my door, what are my options? A: Get delivery confirmation or have me ship your package to your work address which is also ideal especially during the holiday season.. USPS, PayPal, nor any other third party insurance will cover for stolen products that are shown delivered. Signature confirmation will require the delivery person to hand it directly to you. Signature confirmation is automatically included for all brushes with a value of $120 or greater.
#6 Q: Can you ship Badger hair brushes outside of the USA? A: No, Wolf Whiskers is defined as a Commercial entity by the Fish and Wildlife Service. As a commercial entity, The Fish and Wildlife Service requires an inspection fee that costs more than a shaving brush for EVERY shipment that contains anything made with animal hair, even a single brush. Wolf Whiskers cannot ship any badger hair products or import them without this fee and permit. So, since the fee costs more than the product, international shipments of animal hair is not optional.
#7 Q: My postman leaves my packages occasionally in front of my door step. What should I do? A: Get Delivery signature confirmation or establish your PayPal shipping address designated to your work address. See questions above. The holiday season brings out larger numbers of "porch pirates."
#8 Q: Should I use signature confirmation even though I feel that I have a secure delivery location? (only available for USA addresses) A: Yes, ideally you should. Sadly, USPS insurance nor any other shipping insurance will cover for lost or stolen packages if it is shown to be delivered. This includes porch pirates or animals that may swipe packages from doorsteps.
#9 Q: I use a USA based shipping service for international shipments. How do I proceed? A: Signature confirmation will be required. Once the package is shown as delivered to the shipping service, the package is considered shipped. I CANNOT be responsible for lost parcels outside of the USA or lost by the shipping service. NO REFUNDS for lost International packages, so order at your own risk. I do not have any recourse with postal delivery systems outside if the USA. Fortunately, I have never had an international package lost that was sent to the address used on the payment, so odds are good you will receive your order as expected.
#10 Q: Can you make a handle and send it directly to a knotting service or another vendor for me? A: Yes, I can ship a handle directly to a knotting service within the USA. For example, if you are an international buyer, I can ship your brush handle directly to a knotting service such as Declaration Brushworks with signature confirmation to make the transaction less complicated for you. Just be aware, you are buying the brush handle "as is." That is to say, if you get the brush after it has been knotted and you don't like my workmanship, appearance, feel, shape weight or color of the handle or the knot that was put into your handle, there is absolutely nothing I can offer you for compensation.
SECTION 8: PRIVACY & OTHER QUESTIONS SECTION 8: OTHER QUESTIONS
#1 Q: Can you re-knot one of your brush handles or a vintage handle? A: No, there are many guys on the forums that will do this for you. It requires a completely different skill set and tooling that I do not possess. Sorry for this inconvenience, but it is just not part of my skill set.
#2 Q: How long do I have to pay for the brush once it is complete? A: Most people are excited to receive the brush ASAP. I prefer payment upon completion, but circumstances can certainly occur that would require delay of payment or cancellation of payment altogether. I am a family man myself and understand that things happen that have more immediate attention and I am not offended at all. Just please contact me ASAP if something were to occur.
#3 Q: Privacy concerns. A: Privacy statement for data collection: This Privacy Statement of Wolf Whiskers LLC outlines how your personally identifiable information and other personal data (your “user information”) will be collected, used, and shared in connection with your access to and/or use of the Wolf Whiskers’ Waitlist or raffle content, features, services, or other offerings that Wolf Whiskers may provide in connection therewith. RETURNS & REPLACEMENTS Returns are accepted within 7 days of the date you receive your order, i.e. your brush has been shown as delivered by USPS. Returned items must be in their original, unused condition and sent back at your expense unless it is due to my error. It is the responsibility of the customer to inspect your product for any unpleasing appearance and satisfaction of the color combination you requested. Please check that the knot does not incur any loose movement within the socket. Gently comb the knot with a wide tooth comb for loose hairs. It is expected and completely normal to have several so, don't panic. There are tens and tens of thousands of hair estimated between 70-90,000 just in a 24mm badger brush and more for larger knots. Also, inspect for any obvious defects in my craftsmanship or that the colors are acceptable to your eyes. Please know that if you apply water or shaving products or even clean your brush, you have decided to accept the quality of your brush handle. Please inspect your shaving brush before you do this.
Note this policy: If I send an email with brush completion proof pictures and I follow up with an email and or invoice, and communication for the transaction has stopped for over 3 days, the transaction and or invoice will be canceled and the brush will be offered for general sale.
